DISCOVERY

Research questions

What do coaches want to achieve with the training builder but currently can't?

What are the biggest pains and blockers in their use of the training builder?

Users

Holistic Coaches

Holistic coaches support clients in all areas of life, combining fitness, nutrition, mindset, and lifestyle for overall well-being.

Coaches' Clients

People seeking support across multiple aspects of their lives, such as fitness, nutrition, mental well-being, and lifestyle habits, not just physical training.

Research Summary - Survey results showing user satisfaction metrics Usability Issues - Diagram showing key pain points in workout builder interface Coach Requirements - Chart showing requested features and functionality

1. Usability & workflow challenges

Coaches struggle with too much scrolling, confusing navigation, and awkward drag-and-drop when creating or editing plans.

2. Lack of training options and flexibility

Builder lacks support for key training formats like AMRAP, EMOM, Tabata, and progression, which forces coaches to use workarounds or external tools.

3. Limitations in assigning plans to clients and setting plan progressions

Coaches want to create new exercises on the fly, adjust sets and reps per client, and easily organize or reuse templates, but current options are limited and require manual, repetitive work.

Opportunity Mapping

We used an opportunity tree to organize issues from different research sources. Making it easier to map and prioritize which specific user opportunities would best achieve our desired business and product outcomes

DESIGN PROCESS

Brainstorming Session - Team collaborating on initial solution ideas Validation Strategy - Framework for testing key assumptions with users Wireframing Process - Early interface designs for improved workout builder Usability Testing - Coach providing feedback on prototype interface

1. Team brainstorming workshop

I organized a workshop where the team sketched solutions to address our most critical, prioritized user opportunities.
Brainstorming Session - Team collaborating on initial solution ideas

2. Mockups and feedback session

We created initial Figma wireframes and ran a team session where everyone gave feedback using "I like, I wish, I wonder" sticky notes.
Validation Strategy - Framework for testing key assumptions with users

3. Listing and prioritizing assumptions

We identified and ranked the key assumptions behind our solutions to test what must be true for the solution to succeed.

4. Validating solution assumptions with Coaches

We tested critical assumptions directly with coaches, using their feedback to refine and improve our designs.

SOLUTION

The new interface brings everything into one view. Plan sessions on the left, exercises in the center, and client information on the right

Before - Old interface design
After - New interface design

The exercise selector now sits in the right panel making it faster and easier to search for and add exercises

We've added new formats like TABATA, EMOM, AMRAP, and video-based sessions to support a broader range of training styles

Tabata Workout Builder Interface - Redesigned UI for creating interval-based training sessions

Clients will be able to follow along with their coach's video during workouts, creating a more interactive and engaging training experience
